How to Adopt
Adopting a dog from BARC is an easy process, but please be aware that our purpose is to find the dog the best possible home which will suit the dog's personality and traits.
If you would like to adopt a homeless beagle, please first read our Adoption Standards
Please be aware that we will process all adoption application on a first come, first served basis, and there is no guarantee that the dog you are interested in will be available at the time your application is processed. We cannot place a "hold" on any dogs to be adopted.
Please note that due to the sheer number of requests that come in regularly, we are unable to respond to every inquiry for information on a particular dog without submitting an application. BARC is operated by volunteers and we make every effort to fit in the rescue's needs around our regular work, family, and own pets' schedule. Therefore, our Adoption Counselors’ time is prioritized by working with people that have filled out adoption applications and are working through the adoption process.
Our primary goal is to place each dog in the best situation possible, and that starts with qualifying adopters through an application and home visit before discussing details on the current dogs available.
Thank you for thinking “adoption” and considering one of BARC’s homeless beagles!

Please Read The Following Before Submitting an Application With BARC.
Are you looking for the “Perfect” dog?
If so, a rescue dog may not be the right choice for you. Beagles end up in rescue for a variety of reasons, none of them their fault. Many people acquire a cute puppy not realizing that the seemingly perfect beagle their neighbor has, is the result of a lot of hard work. When their beagle puppy reaches the adolescent stage and has no manners or training, the family decides that this isn't the dog for them and the dog is cast aside. It is at that stage that many beagles end up in the hands of rescue. Other reasons we get for turning a dog in are that the family is moving, that the couple are now expecting a baby, the family got a new puppy and now have no time for the older dog, etc.
Many of our dogs are taken in from the pounds within the state of Arizona and were slated for euthanization, either because they caught a doggie cold (kennel cough), became fearful in a kennel environment and didn’t show well, or simply because there was not enough space for them with the many strays and owner turn-ins that come into County pounds on a daily basis. Because of these situations, most rescue dogs have challenges of some sort or another. Most are minor and easily corrected with simple obedience training accompanied with time and patience—and lots of love!! Others will take more time to work through.
Keep in mind, there is always an adjustment period when bringing a new dog into your household. This period can range from a few days to several months depending on the background of the dog. If you are not prepared or committed to work through this period you should reconsider adopting. The worst thing that can happen is to have to uproot a dog that has only been in a new home for a short period of time. It is extremely unfair and damaging to the dog. BARC works tirelessly to minimize the chances of a return and follow a thorough adoption process to set both the dog and the adopter up for success in a harmonious match.
Have you done your research on the beagle breed?
There is a vast amount of information available today about the beagle and other breeds. You must take the responsibility of educating yourself and your family about your breed of choice. The AKC rates Beagles as one of the most popular breeds, and no one can deny the cuteness that is a beagle puppy. However, please do not even consider adding a Beagle to your family based on looks alone. Behind that sweet face is a very stubborn and single-minded scent-hound! Some of the most endearing qualities of a beagle can also cause the most frustration to someone not familiar with what to expect from this breed. Please visit our “Beagles 101” bone if you haven’t already to learn more about the beagle.
The Adoption Process
Each rescue dog is different and we do everything possible to ensure that each dog is placed in the home best able to meet its unique requirements and needs. We are only able to do this by first, assessing the dog through our foster care program and then assessing each potential home for suitability by conducting an interview and home visit. Our adoption process is listed below.
Step 1: Adoption Application
Once you complete and submit your application it is reviewed by our adoption team and qualified applicants will be contacted via your preferred method of contact. You may either mail in a completed paper copy with the $10 application fee to the address listed on the application or, if you prefer a quicker response, you may save it as a file and e-mail it to adoptions@azbarc.com and make your application payment via PayPal.
Step 2: Qualification
If the application meets the initial requirements, then one of our Adoption Counselors will go through your application with you over the phone or via e-mail to ensure there are no errors and to clarify any points as necessary.
Step 3: Home Visit(s)
After the Phone Interview, one of our volunteers will contact you to set up a Home Visit at a suitable time when all members of your household can be present. Because a home visit is required, we do not do out of state adoptions.
Step 4: Notification
Shortly after the Home Visit, you will be notified about our decision and one of our Adoption Counselors will speak to you in more detail about what your expectations are for your new dog.
Step 5: Matchmaking
Successful applicants are matched with a dog. Our primary goal is to place the dog in the best possible home which will suit the dog's personality and traits. We encourage you to stay in contact with our representatives since we get new dogs in all the time.
Step 6: You Add a New Member to Your Family!
Once we find your match we will make arrangements for you to meet the dog. If it’s a good fit for your family and a good fit for the dog, you will be asked to sign an adoption contract and for an adoption donation to help cover our veterinary costs. After you adopt we will follow up with you during the initial adjustment period and we are always available to answer questions and provide help when possible.
Step 7: You Become A Success Story!!!
We wish you and your rescue dog all the best. Remember you are now part of the BARC family. Always feel free to ask us questions and send pictures. We love to hear how our BARC alumni are doing!!!
